Co-Chairs:

The HIV Science conference is taking place at a moment when a new Mexican Administration is reviewing its approach to drug control, when harm reduction approaches to drug use are globally challenged, and when the global consensus on drug control is crumbling. This results in a situation where the HIV response among people who use drugs needs particular attention, especially in a country where reparation efforts will focus on displaced populations and reducing violence.

The suggested session will help bring the HIV response to the forefront of the drug policy reforms taking place in Mexico, but also to highlight the current prevalence of HIV, tuberculosis and hepatitis among people who use drugs in the country, both in the community and in prison. The session will gather, under the auspices of the Global Commission, a group of practitioners from government, academia and civil society to address the best path to end HIV transmission among people who use drugs.
